  US Experts Tour
Australia:  August 2-9

To launch the 'Gateway to the US' Conference Program, ANZA Technology Network, in conjunction with its partners, invited four outstanding US executives to tour Australia in early August, 2004.

The US Experts Tour visited Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and Sydney. The events were free to attend, and over 300 executives signed up for the valuable introduction to the Gateway to the US Program.

The purpose of the tour was to brief Australian technology executives on the state of the US technology market and to update executives on the real opportunities that exist in the US for Australian technology companies.

The events involved presentations from the US Experts with opportunities for one-on-one meetings after the presentations.

Amal JohnsonAmal Johnson, Venture Partner, ComVentures

Amal Johnson has over 20 years of management and operational experience with high technology companies.

Prior to joining ComVentures, Amal was a founding partner of Lightspeed Venture Partners from 1999 through 2003. During her five year tenure with the firm, she focused primarily on enterprise software and infrastructure investments, including SiteSmith, Alibris, and MAE Software.

Previously, Amal served as President of Baan Supply Chain Solutions, and as President of Baan Affiliates and Baan Americas. She has also held the role of President of ASK Manufacturing Systems, and held various executive positions with IBM.

Amal holds a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from Montclair College, and completed graduate work in computer science at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Andrew Nash has a background rich in growing and transforming enterprise software and systems integration companies on a global basis over a period of twenty years. Mr. Nash currently serves as the President and CEO of Novaroo, Inc., a privately held strategy and advisory services firm. Mr. Nash has served as Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer or key leadership roles over the past ten years, as well as participating in Board, Advisory Board and strategic advisor capacities.

Prior to Novaroo, Inc., Mr. Nash served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of BroadVision, a leading personalization, commerce, content and portal applications provider. He led the turnaround of this publicly held software enterprise, restructuring and rebuilding the company on a global basis. Mr. Nash has also served as Chief Executive Officer of Collaborex, Inc. a collaborative commerce application service provider. Prior to Collaborex, Mr. Nash was promoted through the executive ranks at Baan Company, ultimately serving as Executive Vice President, Services and a member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Nash also held the position of CEO, Coda plc, and President, Baan Corporate Office Solutions during his tenure at Baan. In 1995 Mr. Nash commenced the Asia Pacific operation of International Consulting Solutions, a company acquired by Deloitte Consulting. After the acquisition, Mr. Nash became a Managing Partner at Deloitte Consulting and served on the Global Board of Management of Deloitte Consulting/ICS. Mr. Nash previously held management positions with Oracle and Arthur Andersen.

Mr. Nash serves on the Advisory Boards of multiple privately-held software and technology companies. Mr. Nash is a Chartered Accountant and earned a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Computing from Chisholm Institute of Technology (now Monash University).

Mark Cameron White is a business transactional lawyer and a founding partner of White & Lee LLP, a corporate, technology and international law firm with offices in Menlo Park, California (Silicon Valley) and Portland, Oregon (the Pacific Northwest). He represents a wide variety of private and public companies and venture capital funds on all matters relating to the formation, financing, growth and liquidity of technology-based enterprises. Mark regularly advises companies on strategic positioning, business model and revenue generation issues, the preparation of investment materials and presentations, and the structure of complex corporate reorganizations, consolidations and strategic corporate partnerships. He has worked with recognized domestic companies such as HotMail, Classmates Online, and 3ware - international companies such as Net263 (the Peoples Republic of China), Optech (France), Nexit Ventures (Finland) and Ukraine Software Consortium (Ukraine) - and with several prominent venture capital funds including New Enterprise Associates, Nokia Venture Partners, Selby Ventures, Horizon Capital, the Band of Angels and Rocket Ventures.

In addition to his work as a lawyer, Mark also works on international investment banking matters in his capacity as a Managing Director and General Counsel to ChinaVest Ltd, a merchant bank in the People's Republic of China; and as a founder and principal of Layered Intelligence Inc., a diversified financial services firm that provides domestic investment banking, project management and international software outsource services.

Mark is a frequent lecturer on legal, business, and technology issues concerning emerging growth technology companies - and he has been featured in seminars for the Northern California Association of Harvard Business School, the International Angels Institute, the Asian Business Association, and the EDA Consortium. He has also presented at conferences in the People's Republic of China and Malaysia. In addition, for over 6 years Mark organized and moderated the Soup to Nuts seminar series for the Software Development Forum in the Silicon Valley; for over 3 years he has organized and moderated the Silicon Forest Forum conference with Intel Capital in the Pacific Northwest (www.siliconforestforum.com), and he organized and wrote and presented case studies involving technology company issues in the Executive Leadership Series sponsored by the Software Development Forum and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Previously, in the legal profession Mark was a founder of the law firm of Carr, Defilippo, White & Ferrell, the law firm of White & Altman, and he has worked as a transactional attorney at both Fenwick & West and Cooley Godward. Prior to his legal career, Mark worked as the Managing Director of the International Trade Division of the Harper Group, a Fortune 500 company, and he was a co-founder of Campamericana, an international travel operator based in Brussels, Belgium.

Mark received his J.D. at the University of California at Berkeley - Boalt Hall School of Law in 1987; his M.B.A. at Harvard University, Graduate School of Business in 1979; and his B.A. in Economics at Rutgers College, Rutgers University, in 1977, Phi Beta Kappa. He is an avid golfer, runner and oarsman.

Dr. Richard G. Caro is the President and founder of TangibleFuture, Inc.(www.tangiblefuture.com), where he helps entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs build high technology growth businesses.

Until December 2003, Richard was Managing Director at RHK, a provider of advisory services to the communications industry, where he was responsible for leading rhk«s Communications Components consulting practice and Innovations competency center. Previously, Richard held positions as CEO (founder) of Vital Insite, a venture-backed start-up company developing continuous, non-invasive blood pressure monitoring devices; Engineering Program Manager at Coherent, then one of the two largest laser manufacturers in the world; and V.P. Technology Development (CTO & employee #5) of Summit Technology, a pioneer in the laser refractive surgery business. Before entering industry, he was a member of the research staff at Stanford University, working in the fields of applied physics, optics and laser development.

Richard has been responsible for the development of a number of successful products, and has 20 issued patents and over 45 peer reviewed publications. He received a B.Sc. (Hons) degree from Melbourne University, Australia, and a D.Phil., in experimental laser physics and non-linear optics, from Oxford University Ú where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

David Cannington has a 20 year background in international sales, marketing and advertising and has held senior account management and marketing positions in the USA, UK and Australia.

He moved to the Bay Area in 1990 and soon after founded a consulting business providing market entry services to Australian and Canadian clients. In that capacity he opened the US market for Scanagraphix, a leading Australian digital imaging company and subsequently partnered with Canadian companies in the imaging and printing industries to build their US client base.

David was the founding Chief Executive of ANZA Technology Network has been instrumental in building ANZA Technology Network into a successful regional technology networking organization that connects the Australian, New Zealand and US technology sectors. David has been actively involved in the Australian business community in the Bay Area. He is past President of the Australian/American Chamber of Commerce. David holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) from Chisholm Institute of Technology (now Monash University).
