US Experts Tour 2005

ANZA Technology Network proudly announces two outstanding Silicon Valley executives will join the US Experts Tour at the end of July. Peter Hankin, Managing General Partner, of Sand Hill Road Venture Fund, The Infrastructure Fund, and Dr Richard Caro, Founder and CEO TangibleFuture, will join the previously announced members of the tour: Larry Marshall, Chairman Intersymbol & AOC Tech, Bob O’Brien, General Partner, CID Equity Partners and David Cannington, CEO ANZA Technology Network.

The theme of the US Experts Tour presentations will be “Secrets to Growing a Successful Technology Business in the US”. Headlining the tour will be Larry Marshall, one of Australia’s leading technology entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley today. Few technology executives in Silicon Valley have the track record of having started 6 successful technology ventures, let alone an Australian.

With the two additional members of the tour, the US Experts have been actively engaged in over forty technology start-ups in the US, representing an incredibly rich source of knowledge and experience. They will provide insights into the key ingredients to building a successful technology business in the US and will directly relate these lessons to Australian and New Zealand technology companies as they prepare to enter or enhance their US presence.

The events will involve presentations from the US Experts with opportunities for round table feedback sessions with the US Experts after the presentations. Limited places are available for the round table feedback sessions.(see dates and locations section of the US Experts website)

The US Experts Tour is the first in a series of events in Australia and New Zealand leading up to the ANZA Technology Network Australian and New Zealand Technology Showcase Conference in Silicon Valley, November 13-15, 2005.

Attendance at the US Experts Tour events is free and open to all technology executives and entrepreneurs who have an interest in the US market.

Larry R. Marshall, PhD
Chairman, Intersymbol, & AOC Tech.

One Australia’s Most Successful Technology Entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley

Dr. Larry R. Marshall is a serial entrepreneur with 6 successful startups to his credit over the past 16 years in Biotechnology, Photonics, & Semiconductors, with several profitable acquisitions and one IPO. He is currently Chairman of Intersymbol, a semiconductor processor company, and AOC Tech, a cable equipment company.

He previously served as CEO (& founder) of Translucent developing optical gain in Silicon for interconnects, which was recently acquired after a successful partnership with a large public semiconductor corporation. Prior to Translucent, he was CEO (& founder) of Lightbit manufacturing unique optical processors for Telecom Regenerators and Biotechnology chips. Prior to Lightbit, Larry was VP of Iridex, where he enabled the company’s IPO, and co-founded spin-offs Iriderm, and Iridex OEM Group. He was CEO (& founder) of Light Solutions where he rolled out the first visible semiconductor lasers, and formed Iridex. Prior to Light Solutions he ran Business Development, and formerly Technical Programs at Fibertek, where he rolled out the first 1540nm parametric laser. Larry's primary focus is studying new markets, and then developing appropriate technologies to leverage new products into those markets.

Larry holds 18 patents protecting numerous commercial products, and has over 100 publications and presentations. He is Chairman (emm.) of Advanced Solid State Photonics, an Advisory Board member to Laser Focus World, and holds Board positions on Arasor, and Photon Engineering. Larry was born in Sydney Australia, received his BS Honors from Macquarie University (Sydney), and PhD from the Commonwealth Center of Excellence.

Peter Hankin
Managing General Partner, The Infrastructure Fund

Educated at Harvard Mr. Hankin started his career working for the soon to be CEO of Time-Warner Communications in New York, where he worked in the electronic media group. During that time he focused on cable TV operations, introduction of new media businesses and the valuation of content.

After Time Warner, Mr.Hankin joined the start-up company world spending first 5 years in a Bell Laboratories spin-off making semiconductor lasers, starting an alternative telephone access carrier in NYC and next accepting a job turning around the subsidiary of a multinational company making products for the communications, imaging and biomedical device markets. Chief among that company’s accomplishments and key to its turnaround was the co-invention (with IBM Rochester) of what is known today to be Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel transceiver modules.

In 1991, after successfully turning around the high tech subsidiary, Mr. Hankin moved to California ( Silicon Valley) where he joined two other colleagues in launching RHK, a deep technology analysis and market research firm specializing in IT technologies. In 1999 he left to form The Infrastructure Fund, a venture capital fund specializing in telecommunications investments. He remains the Managing General Partner of that fund today, located in Menlo Park, California. He resides today in Palo Alto, California.

Robert J. O’Brien
General Partner, CID Equity Partners

20 years of senior executive experience in the US high tech. industry

Bob O’Brien is a General Partner of CID Equity Partners. He has over 20 years of senior executive experience in the high technology industry, 15 of them in Silicon Valley. His areas of expertise include software, semiconductors, imaging and video display, and related hardware technology.

Bob is currently a director at the following companies: Exacq Technologies, a company that designs and manufactures PC-based data acquisition boards and related products ; Hypernex, Inc., a company that developed a combination hardware/software technology platform for semiconductor manufacturers; InterSymbol Communications, a manufacturer of high-speed components for next generation broadband networking systems; Midi, Inc., the leading provider of high-impact ethics and compliance learning solutions to Fortune 500 and mid-sized companies; and RedSky, the leading provider of emergency response crisis solutions, including E-911. He is an observer on the board of Ageia Technologies, a developer of advanced technology to enhance interactive digital media; and Bridge Semiconductor, a fabless, mixed-signal semiconductor company .

Bob has previously served on the boards of Maxim IT, a software company featuring a unique digital asset retrieval and integration solution for engineering and manufacturing markets; Radiate, a developer of data mining software; Shakti Systems, a developer of integrated circuits for power management applications; and was an observer on the board of SportsHuddle, a website featuring daily highlights and related information concerning sporting events in high schools.

Bob is active in the venture community and has served on several conference committees, participated as a judge in many business plan competitions and selection committees, and served as a moderator or panel member at many venture-related events. He is also active in several University technology transfer and technology commercialization organizations. It is through these activities that he serves to mentor early stage entrepreneurs and offer them information on successfully presenting their vision for funding and raising the capital necessary to grow their businesses.

Prior to joining CID, Bob was a Partner in the merchant banking firm, Union Atlantic, where he focused on opportunities in the technology sector. Bob also served in an executive capacity with four venture-backed start-ups: CEO of InfoChip Systems, Senior Vice President of ULSI Systems, and executive management for Tecmar and Softsmith Corp. He also served as Vice President/General Manager for Western Digital Corporation and Senior Vice President for Truevision/RasterOps Corporation.

Bob holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Findlay and is a graduate of the Technology Executive Program at Stanford University.

Richard G. Caro
CEO, TangibleFuture, Inc.

Dr. Richard G. Caro has over 20 years of experience working at the intersection of technology and business: as CEO of two startups, CTO of a third, occasional angel investor, and advisor to numerous new business ventures in fields such as life sciences, communications, alternative energy, security, and nanotechnology. He has been responsible for the development of a number of successful products and has 21 issued patents.

Richard is presently founder & CEO of TangibleFuture, Inc., which provides hands-on guidance to entrepreneurs navigating the path from idea to profitable business. Prior roles include Managing Director at RHK, a provider of advisory services to the communications industry; CEO (founder) of Vital Insite, a venture-backed medical device start-up; Engineering Program Manager at Coherent, then one of the two largest laser manufacturers in the world; and V.P. Technology Development (CTO & employee #5) of Summit Technology, a pioneer in the laser refractive surgery business. Before entering industry, he was a member of the research staff at Stanford University.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Richard has lived and worked in the USA since 1982. He received a B.Sc. (Hons) degree from Melbourne University, Australia, and a D.Phil. in experimental physics from Oxford University — where he was a Rhodes Scholar.

David Cannington
CEO, ANZA Technology Network

Founding CEO ANZA Technology Network with 20 years international sales and marketing experience

David Cannington has a 20 year background in international sales, marketing and advertising and has held senior account management and marketing positions in the USA, UK and Australia.

He moved to the Bay Area in 1990 and soon after founded a consulting business providing market entry services to Australian and Canadian clients. In that capacity he opened the US market for Scanagraphix, a leading Australian digital imaging company and subsequently partnered with Canadian companies in the imaging and printing industries to build their US client base.

David was the founding Chief Executive of ANZA Technology Network has been instrumental in building ANZA Technology Network into a successful regional technology networking organization that connects the Australian, New Zealand and US technology sectors. David has been actively involved in the Australian business community in the Bay Area. He is past President of the Australian/American Chamber of Commerce. David holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) from Monash University.
