ANZA Gateway Summit ’07 –
It’s a Wrap!

It’s been a busy few months for our participating companies, mentors and ANZA network members leading up to last month’s Gateway to the US Summit in Silicon Valley. And, the post-Summit week was just as intense for many of you, filled with meeting opportunities and travel. Now that we’ve had a chance to catch our collective breath, I’d like to again extend my thanks to everyone who took part in making this Gateway Summit one of our best ever.

The 12 showcasing companies were some of the highest caliber and most diverse ever to come through the Gateway. Our panel of judges that met after the company presentations to choose the winner of the Guy Manson Hottest Technology Award had a prolonged debate over which company best deserved the honor. They ended up with a split decision, not because they couldn’t name a company that was the best—but because there were so many companies that were clearly the best Australia and New Zealand have to offer in various industry sectors and that are in such good stead to compete here in the US.

The CEOs and executives of the 12 companies were a well-prepared, focused group that was a pleasure to work with. They entered the program in August with a strategy to find out more about bringing their business to the US market. I applaud their willingness to work with their mentors, who guided, advised and quickly coached them up to speed to present in front of a room full of US tech execs, entrepreneurs and VCs. The audience was highly impressed and many of them took advantage of our new format this year to spend a couple of hours after the presentations at an informal meet and greet that I know led to many new connections.

In addition to the invaluable support of the ANZA mentors, who volunteer their time in the Gateway program, my thanks also go to our business forum panelists who also volunteer their time to share their expertise with our participating companies and Summit attendees. Without the quality and expertise of this year’s participants, the ANZA Gateway business forums would be just another series of panel discussions. Instead, they are lively, insightful and extremely valuable sessions. Many thanks also go to our host site, Plug & Play, and our many sponsors, namely founding sponsor Austrade, airline partner Air New Zealand and the South Australian and New South Wales Governments, who sponsored our various after-hours events. Your continued support remains the impetus behind ANZA’s ongoing efforts to link the Australian, New Zealand and American technology sectors into a consistently strong and viable force.

ANZA Gateway to the US ’07 Summit Highlights

“Don’t do drive bys. People come here for 3 weeks, meet everybody and then go back home to Australia or New Zealand and it’s ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ I say come over here, pitch a tent and show people you’re serious and you’re here to do business.” – John Scull, Managing Director, Southern Cross Venture Partners and Funding Your Business in the US business forum panelist.

ANZA Companies in the News

Buzka, CentricMinds and Tallstoreez—three Gateway ’07 companies took part on ANZA network member and mentor Ian Griffin’s podcast series featured on his blog, Professionally Speaking. Hear what each of these companies had to say about their products and their experience at the Gateway Summit by clicking on each company name above.

Wanted World Wide, another Gateway ’07 participating company, talked with Francis Fischbach of the SKMurphy blog about their experience at the ANZA Gateway Summit.

Broadcaster Media’s Tammy Halter, who’s brought her technology to the Gateway twice (’07 and ’05) and is currently taking part in the Fast Track program was the feature of a recent Smart Company “Hot Innovator” story. Read all about Tammy’s success in the global marketplace and her entrepreneurship here.

Adelaide-based Digislide has received $1.9 million Commercial-Ready government grant for their Digismart hand-held, stand-alone or embedded projection technologies. Digislide won the Guy Manson Award at Gateway 2005, which earned the company a slot at the invite-only DEMO conference the following year. Digislide is now participating in the ANZA Fast Track program.

Gateway participant and 2004 Guy Manson Award winner In the Chair has just announced the release of their new product, StarPlay. The release is part of a multi-million dollar, worldwide distribution deal with Sibelius, a division of the $2Billion NASDAQ-listed digital media giant Avid. StarPlay incorporates the Sibelius file format, the world's most widely used format for distributing sheet music digitally, and lets music students learn by virtually performing with professional musicians, bands and orchestras.

New Zealand-based Derceto, whose software saves energy and water by optimizing the pumping and sourcing of water and waste water, was chosen by California-based AlwaysOn as one of the GoingGreen 100 Top Private Companies for 2007. Derceto took part in the 2004 ANZA Gateway to the US program.

Fast Track participant Exinda Networks has retained its R&D offices in Melbourne while relocating its headquarters to Boston. In a move to further advance its global efforts, the company has just been awarded a contract to provide its WAN optimisation appliances to the Malaysian Government. The $A1.25 million deal involves the supply of appliances to more than 700 networked sites over two years as part of the Government Integrated Telecom Network (GITN).

Gateway ’06 participant Rising Sun Research, creators of cineSync, a Guy Manson Award-winning technology, has added a few more awards in 2007. In September they were named Australian Anthill’s Coolest Company and won Anthill’s X-Factor award as well. Earlier in the year, they placed third in the IT Secrets competition. The company has launched a major product update (cineSpace 2.5) and continues to work on some bleeding edge 3D stereoscopic technology. Writes CEO Clint Walker, “So it's all happening, plenty of interest around the business, several American partners talking about more 'intimate' relationships and riding the market swell of our industry. And so much of our success had its genesis around the Gateway to the US '06.”
