They have taken products to market, raised capital, built high-performing teams; they have been on both sides of the board table and the investment table and they have M&A and IPO experience. They bring all this talent and experience to ANZA’s services when they engage with ANZA to mentor our clients.

US MENTORS

Chibby Alloway Chibby Alloway has over 30 years of business development, design, build and operational experience in the water and wastewater utility industry.  A varied employment career with regulators (US Environmental Protection Agency), public sector (Ventura Sanitation District), engineering company (Metcalf and Eddy), and private section operations (Veolia Water) have provided Chibby with a comprehensive prospective of water and wastewater technology and management. His technical expertise includes applied water and wastewater research and development, biological nutrient removal, water reuse, process and consumable optimization programs, capital improvement plan development and execution, process engineering and modeling, facility and network asset management programs, and in situ reductions of volatile and semi-volatile organics. His managerial expertise ranges from directing a small municipal wastewater project to managing a large water and wastewater business unit with annual revenues of $160M and over 670 employees. Chibby holds the top operator license of Grade V as issued by the State of California and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from Stanford University.

Simon Anderson Simon Anderson is the CEO of DreamHost. He is an Internet, ecommerce and digital media executive with a successful track record of building companies from startup to leaders in their market. Simon has led and managed teams across most major business functions, including marketing, sales, product, operations and engineering. He has served as an executive, advisor and board member of over 15 startups and growth companies in the US and Asia. Prior to DreamHost, Simon served as Chief Marketing Officer of Pictage, where he doubled the company’s customer base and formed major partnerships with Adobe, Kodak, Canon and Blurb. Additionally, he helped raise over $8M in growth capital. Simon previously was a key executive of three early and growth-stage venture-backed companies: Affinity Internet, Authenticlick and Biggerboat. He was the US-based general partner of Allen & Buckeridge, a leading Australian venture capital firm. Simon started his professional career as a corporate and commercial attorney in Sydney, Australia specializing in media, IT and communications transactions and advice. Simon has a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and a Law Degree (LLB/JD) from the Australian National University. He has been a guest lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and completed executive programs on strategy and negotiation at Harvard Business School.

Jonathan Baer Jonathan Baer is a senior executive who brings a unique perspective to the world of startups. He has been a venture capitalist as well as the Founder and CEO of two venture-backed companies, eBoomerang, an enterprise software company which was sold in 2006 and Artificial Muscle, Inc., a spinout of Stanford Research Institute (SRI) which was sold to AG Bayer in 2010. As a principal and founder of Threshold Ventures, Jon works with companies around the world, serving as an advisor/mentor, working on specific projects (such as creating venture-backed companies from emerging new technologies and helping international companies develop and execute plans for entering the US market), and, when appropriate, taking on interim operating roles. He has worked with a wide range of software, telephony, hardware and services businesses. Earlier in his career, Jon was a General Partner at Oscco Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm which was one of the pioneering firms in Silicon Valley. He has invested in a range of companies including Landec, Peerless Systems and Coinstar. Jon started his career at Exxon Enterprises, where he was responsible for creating and managing new businesses for the corporation. He has also worked for the Gartner Group and Prudential Securities, where he managed a portion of a $240M fund.

Sheryle Bolton Sheryle Bolton is a business strategy consultant for companies in the technology, health care, brain fitness, and media markets. As a serial entrepreneur, Sheryle led companies from startup to IPO and sustainable growth.  She raised almost $100 million in investment funding, guided development of  20 software and Internet products, and devised patent strategies resulting in more than 120 granted patents for these companies. As Chairman and CEO of Scientific Learning, she led a highly successful IPO.  Sheryle is also an experienced executive in investment banking, private equity, health care and media and has served on Boards of Directors of several public and private companies and mutual funds with assets of $60 billion. Sheryle has an MA in Linguistics and a Harvard MBA.

Peter J Bryant Peter Bryant is a Partner with Clareo Partners which specializes in the development of transformative growth and innovation strategy for both global Fortune 500 and emerging companies in the resources, energy and clean tech, manufacturing, health and wellness and technology sectors. Clareo has worked with companies from the US, UK and Asia Pacific, including ITW, Amway, Kraft, Rio Tinto, BP, Castrol, BHP, Peabody Energy, GE, Barrick Gold, Proxima Technology, Maxtel, Onquia, iTechne and Ricoh. Peter has worked extensively with both Australian and New Zealand companies on successful commercialization in the US and Asian markets and has participated in multiple programs with governments and incubators in both countries. Peter has worked closed with leading VCs (e.g., Kleiner Perkins, DFJ, Khosla, Technology Partners, etc). Prior to founding TransTech USA in 2004 (which merged with Clareo Partners in January 2011), Peter spent 24 years working within the global technology industry both as an entrepreneur and in general management for larger enterprises such as GE and Computer Associates, including 12 years in CEO, COO and President roles. He has built successful fast growth companies in the US, APAC and the UK. Peter also sits on the boards of several companies and nonprofits; he is a Senior Advisor to the boutique investment bank Q Advisors LLC and is also a Senior Fellow and board member of the Kellogg Innovation Network, part of the Kellogg School of Management.

Robert Enzerink Robert Enzerink is a partner and senior consultant with The MarkeTech Group, a leader in global voice-of-customer medical marketing research, providing customer insights to direct intelligent business decisions. Robert has more than 20 years experience in medical technology business, with emphasis in the areas of medical devices, nanotechnology and surgical equipment. In his business development role with Nanosys Inc. in Palo Alto, he analyzed the company’s inorganic nanotechnology portfolio to target the most profitable medical device strategies. In the process he identified, obtained and managed over $4.7M in federal R&D grants from NIH, DARPA, and ONR to support nanotech product development costs. Identifying opportunities and creating partnerships, Robert has been involved in the design, business development and delivery of products generating over $1B in total revenues to US, European and Asian markets for firms including Smith+Nephew, Intel, and Johnson & Johnson. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and an MBA in marketing and finance from the University of California Davis Graduate School of Management. He is an inventor with over 30 medical technology patents.

Paul Fox Paul Fox is a partner at the CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund, a seed stage venture capital firm based in San Francisco. He is a green-tech veteran, having worked as an engineer, strategy consultant, and CEO of several startups. Paul was the founder of CT tech2mkt, a technology commercialization firm, which helped launch several Australian companies in the US, including Xerocoat, a solar startup backed by Nth Power and Southern Cross Venture Partners. Other projects included water treatment, solar financing, sensor networks, energy storage and green buildings. Previously, Paul was founding CEO of SC Power Systems, a superconductor company using Australian technology, now listed on the AIM as Zenergy (ZEN). In prior roles, Paul was a VP at Flextronics; the CEO of a fuel cell company; built the first mobile phones in Hungary; was a strategy consultant during the de-regulation of the Australian electricity markets; and was national operations manager for one of Australia’s largest construction organizations. Paul has an MBA from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma from the University of Queensland, and a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours from the University of New South Wales.

Brian Frenzel Brian Frenzel is a life sciences entrepreneur and angel investor. He serves on the boards of directors and the management advisory boards of a number of private companies. His management experience includes co-founding and serving as a senior executive at Centaur Pharmaceuticals, a neurodegenerative disease pharmaceutical discovery and development company, Vesta Medical, a therapeutic medical device company, Adeza Biomedical, a diagnostic device company, and Genelabs Technologies, a biotechnology company. Prior to entering the startup company arena, Brian was the Director of Corporate Planning at Syntex Corporation, a Principal at Booz, Allen & Hamilton and a Lieutenant in the US Navy Nuclear Power Program. Brian holds a BS in physics and an MBA from Stanford University where he graduated first academically in his business school class.

Kerry Haley Kerry Haley is Vice President at Strategic Project Solutions, where she is responsible for all strategic relationships and program development in the industrial, civil infrastructure and technology sectors, assisting owners in the effective delivery of complex and critical construction projects. Kerry has over 25 years of experience in the design, development and delivery of mission critical infrastructure and major capital programs across multiple industry sectors and regions. Previously, she held the role of Director, Global Infrastructure at Better Place, Inc. and prior to this she was recruited to serve as Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Frontier Mobile, a new division of Frontier Communications (NYSE: FTR). Kerry has also served as Vice President of Business Development for SkyPilot Networks, a carrier-class, multi-service wireless systems provider. She holds a B.S. in International Finance from the University of Santa Clara and is on the Emeritus Board of Watermark (formerly The Forum for Women Entrepreneur’s and Executives).

Bardia Housman Bardia Housman is a seasoned entprenuer having built and exited two successful technology companies with combined exit valuations of approximately $100 million. In 2004 Bardia founded Business Catalyst, an SaaS offering with a large reseller network of web designers in more than 50 countries. The platform served tens of thousands of hosted online businesses. In 2009 it was acquired by Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE). Prior to this, Bardia founded Start, Australia’s first free email, in 1997. The service became Australia’s most trafficked website, and powered British Telecom’s Genie service (now O2) in Germany and France, with more than 2.5 million users globally. In 1999 it was acquired by Looksmart Ltd. (NASDAQ: LOOK). Bardia has extensive experience in all areas of business from strategic planning through to grassroots sales. He studied a bachelor of business, nonetheless he wrote the entire application for both of his acquired companies. A true innovator, Bardia exhibits a powerful mix of business acumen and technical nouse.

David Hutton David Hutton, Founder and Principal of Hutton Associates, provides business development consulting services (corporate partnering, strategic planning) to those in the life science/biotechnology sectors. An avid entrepreneur, he actively participates in the search for novel technology around which to foster the creation of new ventures; he is responsible for founding four biotechnology startups. Special relationships have been developed with offshore organizations seeking to foster business relationships in North America. An honors biochemistry graduate of Oxford University, England, David received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of California at Davis.

Olivier Jerphagnon Olivier Jerphagnon is a serial entrepreneur with a talent to bring new technology to market. He is Co-Founder and Sr. Consultant at The Green Frog from Silicon Valley, an enterprise that provides a fresh look at the clean-tech industry and assists sustainable businesses at critical steps of their growth. He was previously CEO of Monitoring Division Inc., selling professional services to tier-1 carriers worldwide. He graduated with a Master of Science from UC Santa Barbara and joined the original team of Calient Networks. At Calient he held positions of increasing responsibility in R&D, manufacturing, marketing and sales. Olivier is a frequent conference speaker and sought-after writer. He is a senior member of IEEE.

Mark B. Johnson Mark B. Johnson is a dynamic leader and senior operating executive who provides management and business expertise, consulting and CEO coaching for private and public companies, executives and non-profit organizations. Having worked in and with venture capital, multiple startups and Fortune 500 companies in the US and internationally, Mark brings a broad global perspective to his role as an ANZA mentor, built on years of building companies and product/service platforms in both operating and director roles. Previously, Mark was CEO of SkyPilot Networks (acquired by Trilliant) and Associate Partner at Mobius Venture Capital, specializing in wireless and software infrastructure. Prior to that, he directed product strategy at Preview Systems (acquired by Aladdin Knowledge Systems) and spent 10 years at Apple in various technical, marketing and international management roles with a primary focus on developer relations. Mark holds a Bachelor’s degree in modern languages and a second major in computer applications from the University of Notre Dame.

C. Anthony Jones Anthony Jones brings extensive knowledge and more than 10 years of hands-on experience in healthcare innovation development and marketing. First with Deloitte Consulting, then as Vice President of the Health and Wellness unit at Scient, he has led major marketing strategy projects for some of the world’s leading pharmaceutical, biotech, medical devices and services companies. Anthony received his degree in medicine from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine followed by a fellowship in medical informatics at Columbia University. Anthony is a graduate of the University of Kentucky where he received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry.

Steven S. Line Steve Line is an accomplished business executive and entrepreneur with over 20 years’ experience in senior management positions for major leaders in the water industry. His career has progressed through senior technical roles into executive leadership directing and implementing global strategies for creating growth in water technology and services markets. Steve’s expertise is in building , streamlining and strengthening product and services based companies. Steve served as President and CEO of ICOMMM Inc. an early stage Bay Area water technology company that produces cloud-based software as a service for infrastructure asset management. Under Steve’s leadership, he took the company from early startup, through multiple rounds of financing, and established a successful national business practice. Five years later, the company merged with Red Zone Robotics, a national wastewater services company, creating an international leader in water infrastructure asset management.  Steve has held senior executive positions at three of the world’s leading environmental engineering companies: AECOM/EDAW, Brown and Caldwell, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. He has extensive experience in a broad array of applied technologies, specifically in clean tech, infrastructure asset management  and information systems. Some of his project experience includes providing technical direction for design automation for the Boston Central Artery Project (Big Dig), and technical systems direction for the engineering consortium on the Super Conducting Super Collider particle accelerator project in Texas. In addition to these US-based projects, Steve has completed projects in Central and South America, Asia, and Europe.

Michael Loftus Mike Loftus has been involved with startups for over 20 years, defining their core company strategies, product roadmaps and driving sustainable revenue. Mike’s first senior role in a startup was E-machines in 1989 as VP Marketing, which was sold to Radius. He then became a member of the management team at Graphic Media which completed a merger with Eagle River Interactive for $23M, which later became Agency.com. At Bullant Inc., a mobile platform startup, he was a member of the leadership team and was appointed CEO for completing the sale of assets to Gravana for $2.2M million, which later became Xumii. In 2005, Mike became CEO and a member of the startup team of inFreeDA, which received a $2.2M investment from Hummer Winblad Partners and was later sold to AT&T. Mike has held other senior management positions over his career including NetFish Technologies, prior to its acquisition by IONA, and at Dialogic, prior to its acquisition by Intel. Mike is currently the Managing Director and VP Product for AdStream Inc., a technology company that delivers ads targeted to the viewer of online and mobile video within the video stream. He is also the Founder of The Glue USA, a consulting practice that assists early stage companies to build the leadership team, define the product roadmap and source investment capital. Mike has earned degrees in business and computer engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, attended the Executive Management program at Stanford University and completed the Franklin Covey Leadership Program: Great Leaders, Great Teams, and Great Results.

Jim Mills
Jim Mills began his business career in the early 1980s, working first in television marketing and promotion with Viacom in New York, and later for a startup television network and a cable television marketing association. After completing his MBA in 1986, he joined Citicorp to work in project finance, structuring and distributing large commercial real estate transactions for domestic and off-shore clients. Jim has since held senior management roles with Scientific Learning, LeapFrog Enterprises and DynaVox Mayer-Johnson, companies respectively working with neuroscience-based training software, educational products, and assistive-communication technologies. His experience is widespread across marketing, business development and public affairs, from startup to IPO. As an independent consultant Jim has focused on assisting clients with business planning, marketing, product development, capital planning, and valuation issues. Jim holds a BS from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard.

Jim Rynne Jim Rynne is a hands-on leader with a track record of entrepreneurial success at introducing technology-based products into new markets while at both large companies and early-stage start-ups.  As the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Novelx, he boot-strapped this early-stage start-up by commercializing its nanoscale imaging technology and then successfully sold the company to Agilent Technologies.  As Vice President of Product Management at Glimmerglass Networks he successfully productized its MEMS-based photonic switching technology for the telecommunications, test, video and government defense markets.  As the Director of Product Management at Kestrel Solutions he introduced a next- generation optical networking system for telecommunications networks. Jim began career at AT&T Bell Laboratories developing telecom network management solutions and later held a variety of corporate strategy and business development positions with Lucent Technologies.

Chris Shipley Chris Shipley is a leading technology analyst focused on entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2004, she co-founded Guidewire Group Inc. to accelerate the growth of early-stage companies and the technology markets they create. Well known as the Executive Producer of the DEMO Conferences for IDG’s Network World, Chris has helped technology companies bring more than 1,500 new products to market since 1996. In 2009, Chris developed the G/Score, a standardized, scalable methodology for the incisive analysis and transparent assessment of startups’ commercial viability, execution, team and business model. When Chris is not in-residence at her Silicon Valley business accelerator Studio G, she is traveling the world applying the G/Score to hundreds of startups each year in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Jewell Sparks
Jewell Sparks is the CEO, founder and visionary behind Strategic Diversity Group, Jewell and Company, OTGC – On The Green Carpet and DIGDiversity. After spending 13 years in the field of biosciences launching innovative products and forming technology alliances for companies such as Procter and Gamble, Eli Lilly and Amgen and medical software entities, Jewell wanted to assist other entities during various stages of their growth and development. Her desire to have more of an impact on business leaders and the communities in which they serve led Jewell to found Strategic Diversity Group (SDG). With SDG Jewell works with a diverse group of clients during critical stages of their growth and development. Some of her clients, alliances, and nonprofit affiliations have included: Topblip.com, 360 Fashion Network, Roque Coco, Setlog, Solar Sailor, Twicketer, The Women’s Film Institute, Spark, The World Rainforest Fund, Green Economy Think Tank, Men’s Vogue, Encore of the SF Ballet, Symphonix and other top tier companies and non profits. Jewell earned an Executive MBA from the University of San Francisco McLaren School of Business in Strategic Planning, Global Markets, and Corporate Communications.

Ted van Linden Ted van Linden is Director of Sustainability for DPR Construction Inc., a top-tier US general contracting/construction management firm. Ted is responsible for all aspects of DPR’s green building program, inclusion of creation of software products, protocols for evaluating and defining benefits of energy efficient/high performance strategies, carbon footprint accounting and reporting, best practices for LEED management documentation and creation of waste diversion metrics. Ted began spearheading DPR’s green efforts in 1998. He has always been an advocate for the environment and encouraged DPR to join the US Green Building Council in January 1999. He has held a National Board Seat on USGBC’s National Board in the category Contractor/Builder. Ted currently advises a number of early stage VC firms on potential new products or innovations as well as sits on an advisory board of a small PV integrator.

Jennifer Zanich  Jennifer Zanich became the General Manager of Xumii Services, a mobile social messaging service, after its acquisition by the Myriad Group in August 2009. Xumii provides a platform that enables Operators, OEMs or ODM’s to provide social networking, messaging and media sharing to their markets. The Xumii Services platform enables the service to be scaled from a browser to native applications through to providing embedded social networking services. Jennifer is an accomplished leader with over 20 years of marketing and executive management experience. Prior to her return to Australia in 2007, Jennifer spent nine years in the US, where she was a Founder of SeeSaw Networks, a digital media services company which successfully raised $10m USD in venture capital. As CEO of Wedgetail Communications, an enterprise security company, she delivered more than seven times return for investors via a successful acquisition. Jennifer has also held executive positions in SkyPilot Networks (wireless broadband) and Microsoft APAC. Jennifer holds several advisory and board roles in the US and Australia including Capital Markets CRC and Aggregate Knowledge.


CHINA MENTORS

Ray Chinsnall Ray Chisnall is the Country Manager China for Gleeds Worldwide, a leading management and construction consultancy with a global strategy and a strong presence in China. Ray has wide and varied senior level experience in all aspects of design, construction, operation, business and project management of projects ranging up to the US$1bn mark. He has been working in Asia for the past 15 years, has lived in China for 10 years and is currently based in Shanghai. As Country Manager, Ray is responsible for Gleeds’ business development and liaises with team members in Shanghai, Suzhou, Hong Kong, Tianjin and globally. He is a member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and has been a Chartered Engineer since 2002.

Andrew Collins Following 8 years of university, traveling, and launching businesses (media, import, and acquisitions), Andrew Collins took the next biggest challenge by acquiring a small innovative media company based in Shanghai, China in 2007. As the CEO of Mailman Group, Andrew has taken the company into the digital age. Mailman serves as a symbol of agency innovation both supporting international client development into the China social media landscape and aggressively growing an online digital investment network. Andrew completed his undergraduate degree in Media/Commerce at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne in addition to completing a year of study at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. He has been named one of Australia’s top Entrepreneurs of the Year in the Under 30 category and was a runner-up for the prestigious Australian Entrepreneur of the Year (2010) award. Andrew is also a board member of Global EO Organisation, Shanghai Chapter.

Jack Derington Jack Derington is a newly appointed senior manager within Brenntag Asia Pacific. He has a 20 years experience in the chemical field and additionally, over the past 2.5 years, has been working as an entrepreneur in areas such as cleantech, iron ore, commodity raw materials and consumer goods. His current position allows him to find and build on various relationships throughout the region, specifically in chemicals and raw materials. He has lived in Shanghai for the past 8 years and has extensive experience in managing successful projects in the China market.

Stefan Malocsay Stefan Malocsay is the Managing Director of NMT Global Projects (China) Ltd., a Netherlands-owned private vessel/project heavy lift logistics company located in China with primary focus on Australian cargo. He has worked in China for more than 20 years, formerly with Hellman Worldwide Logistics, and has extensive experience in North/South trade, mainly between China/Australia/New Zealand/Africa, as well as between China and the US. Currently based in Shanghai, he is a frequent speaker at conferences and in the media on Asian transportation issues.


Richard Meng Richard Meng is a Partner with Nesky Private Equity Management, a firm that advises and invests in growth companies including offshore structures. Richard provides due diligence and evaluation and advisory services to Chinese and foreign SMEs. Richard has also worked for the Queensland government in their trade and investment office in Shanghai and has a senior management role with Taiwanese packaging manufacturer, Long New Industrial Co., Ltd.
